Tiger Woods finished his final round with two bogeys Sunday to shoot four-under 68 at the Hero World Challenge.
It wasn’t the ending he wanted, but it doesn’t take away from the strong performance in his return to golf, finishing 8-under for the tournament. He made the turn Sunday at 31 but had a double bogey on 10.
It was Woods’ first start since withdrawing from a tournament in Dubai in February.
He was optimistic after the round and said his back was pain free.
The issues going into the tournament were, “How was my scoring going to be? How was my feel? How am I going to get used to the adrenaline in my system for the first time in a while?” Woods said on NBC. “That took a little bit of time. I was still scratchy with my irons; I drove it pretty good, made some good putts. Overall I’m very pleased. I showed some good signs; I hit some really good shots out there. A bright future.”
Our Tiger Tracker followed the final round shot by shot.
Hole No. 18: Par 4, 470 Yards
OFF THE TEE (2:24 p.m. ET): A great drive from Tiger right down the middle.
APPROACH SHOT: This is a nice one some 20 feet beyond the hole. He can make that for a 6-under 66.
ON THE GREEN: Wow that was sloppy. He gets greedy trying to make it and it goes by on left and races 3 feet by. The next one hits the right lip and stays out. A sloppy three-putt bogey to close, but this will not mar a strong week.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4-under 68 (10th)
Hole No. 17: Par 3, 184 Yards
OFF THE TEE (2:14 p.m. ET): That one is pulled and finishes in the back part of the left greenside bunker. This could be a tricky up and down.
AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger was almost against the back of the bunker and had to adjust his backswing. But he gets it out 7 feet short of the cup. That’s a great shot and he can absolutely save par.
ON THE GREEN: No dice. That one came off right and misses right. Not a fun bogey.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 17 (9th)
Hole No. 16: Par 4, 485 Yards
OFF THE TEE (2:01 p.m. ET): Woods finally misses a fairway, but by about two yards. He’s in the right rough, but he’s fine.
APPROACH SHOT: He had a good lie, but Tiger misjudged that one. It flies the green. But he’ll have plenty of green to work with for an up and down.
AROUND THE GREEN: He takes out putter and measures the speed perfectly. He cozies that a foot left of the hole. That will be a simple par.
ON THE GREEN: Yes, he cleaned up. No problem.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 under thru 16 (T-7)
Hole No. 15: Par 5, 548 Yards
OFF THE TEE (1:49 p.m. ET): Fairway again. It’s almost robotic at this point.
APPROACH SHOT: He flails that one. Iron in hand and Woods hated it. That one ends up in front right greenside bunker. Not an easy up and down but not extremely difficult. Don’t give up on the birdie.
AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger lands his bunker shot on a downslope and lets it run out about 6 feet by. That’s well done. Great opportunity for birdie.
ON THE GREEN: He slides that left-to-righter in the heart. That’s another birdie. Back-to-back and three in five holes since double.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 6 under thru 15 (T-6)
Hole No. 14: Par 4, 298 Yards
OFF THE TEE (1:39 p.m. ET): He tries to drive the green and the ball comes up just short and right. He made the smart miss, though, as he’ll have an easy pitch with plenty of green to work with.
AROUND THE GREEN: Simple. Perfect course management, as Tiger has easy pitch that he cozies to 2 feet. That’s a kick-in birdie.
ON THE GREEN: He finishes out and he’s now gained back both strokes he lost at No. 10.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 14 (9th)
Hole No. 13: Par 4, 483 Yards
OFF THE TEE (1:30 p.m. ET): He smokes one down the right side of the fairway. It should give him another good look at birdie.
APPROACH SHOT: From 134 yards downwind, Tiger lands this one 10 feet past the flag and left but spins it back hole high. He has about 8 feet for birdie.
ON THE GREEN: Think that was a misread. He hit it where he wanted, but the ball didn’t turn right enough and went over the left edge. It was probably more like 10-11 feet that he missed from there. Simple par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 13 (9th)
Hole No. 12: Par 3, 202 Yards
OFF THE TEE (1:18 p.m. ET): Woods seemed to like this one, but it comes up well short and left in the rough. It actually carried the fronting water by only a couple of yards. That could’ve been a disaster, instead he can make par.
AROUND THE GREEN: A good recovery. He knocks it within 10 feet for par.
ON THE GREEN: A great save. Woods drains it. A key momentum-saver.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 12 (9th)
Hole No. 11: Par 5, 589 Yards
OFF THE TEE (1:06 p.m. ET): Tiger finds the fairway again.
APPROACH SHOT: This is why Woods can be so good. He roasts a long iron that lands short and rolls some 25 feet past the flag. He has that for eagle. He could get both shots he lost at No. 10 right back.
ON THE GREEN: He had that on a pretty good line curling left-to-right, but it was fast and he had to be careful. He doesn’t quite hit it hard enough as the ball comes up a foot short. But that’s an easy birdie. Nice bounce back for him.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 11 (T-9)
Hole No. 10: Par 4, 435 Yards
OFF THE TEE (12:57 p.m. ET): Woods hits another nice one in the fairway.
APPROACH SHOT: Not his best. Tiger’s approach shot finishes short left, but he got unlucky as his tee shot finished in a divot. He’ll have to make a nifty up and down to save par.
AROUND THE GREEN: He hit 8/9 GIR on the front nine and the other was 3 feet off the green. So this is his first real short-game shot of the day, and it works out poorly. We’ll hopefully get specifics soon, but he ends up with 12 feet for bogey.
ON THE GREEN: His putt hits the hole but stays out. That’s an awful double bogey. Kills all momentum.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 10 (T-9)
Hole No. 9: Par 5, 603 Yards
OFF THE TEE (12:39 p.m. ET): Another perfect drive down the fairway. Ho-hum.
APPROACH SHOT: Woods loved that one and thought he had gotten it on the green from 298 yards. But the ball hits a couple yards short of the green and kicks back into greenside bunker. He is disappointed but that’s a good miss. He should still have a good chance at birdie with that being a pretty simple up and down with a good lie.
AROUND THE GREEN: That’s a beauty. Tiger let’s that one run out to inside 3 feet. He should clean that up for birdie and a 5-under 31.
ON THE GREEN: He is out in 31 for the second time in three days. He is now just five back/ Stats for front 9: 5/6 fairways, 8/9 greens in regulation, 13 putts.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 5 under thru 9 (T-4)
Hole No. 8: Par 3, 216 Yards
OFF THE TEE: A good solid one here again. Woods knocks this one about 30 feet left of the hole, and that will be a nice uphill look.
ON THE GREEN: Tiger could take a run at that one and he did. It just slips off right at the end, but he did give himself a chance by leaving his tee shot in that spot. Easy par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 8 (T-7)
Hole No. 7: Par 4, 336 Yards
OFF THE TEE (12:20 p.m. ET): Holy Tiger. Woods takes out driver and launches one. It lands just short of the green and runs out perfectly, as the ball rolls pin high some 20 feet from the cup. He drove the green, and he’ll have that left for eagle.
ON THE GREEN: We had to wait a bit, but it was worth it. That putt looked like it might be finish left, but Tiger played it with die speed, and the ball hit the left side of the cup and curled in. That’s an eagle. Woods is officially on fire.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under thru 7 (T-6)
Hole No. 6: Par 5, 595 Yards
OFF THE TEE (12:06 p.m. ET): He roasts one down the fairway. His driving has been impressive this week.
SECOND SHOT: He actually had to lay up because this hole is playing so long. But he does so beautifully into the fairway.
THIRD SHOT: From 86 yards, Woods tugs it but has great distance control. He finishes 10 feet left of the pin. Good birdie look.
ON THE GREEN: That one was always just a bit left. Tiger can’t get that to drop as it misses on the left side. It’s an easy two-putt par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 6 (T-9)
Hole No. 5: Par 3, 159 Yards
OFF THE TEE (11:56 a.m. ET): Another nice one from Woods. This one comes up a bit short, but just barely. He’ll have 15 feet under the hole for birdie.
ON THE GREEN: Buried it. Woods has another birdie.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 5 (T-9)
Hole No. 4: Par 4, 489 Yards
OFF THE TEE (11:45 a.m. ET): This one is a beauty down the right side. Another fairway for Tiger. He’s seriously driven it so well this week.
APPROACH SHOT: That one ends up OK. Front right pin and he was begging for it to hold on. Ball lands probably about 5 feet or so right of the pin and then funnels off green but it hangs up on fairway about a yard off green. That could’ve funneled 5-10 yards down slope. As it stands, Woods has about 15 feet for birdie, but has to putt through about 3 feet of fairway.
AROUND THE GREEN: It’s too bad that ball didn’t stay on the green because Tiger’s ball jumped up immediately on putt because he was putting from fairway. It still ends up OK, as he cozies that to within a foot. But if it had stayed on, he would’ve had a really makeable putt inside 15 feet with no jumps to deal with.
ON THE GREEN: He taps in for par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 4 (T-9)
Hole No. 3: Par 5, 572 Yards
OFF THE TEE (11:31 a.m. ET): Right down the fairway. He can go for this in two.
APPROACH SHOT: That was so close to being so good. But wow, that swing. Woods goes serious recoil there as he lands ball about 15 feet short of pin from 277 yards, but it just rolls off the back into collection area. He was a couple of yards from having 10 feet for eagle. Regardless, that was cool.
AROUND THE GREEN: Tiger hits a solid chip. He was short-sided, so 8 feet past the cup is not bad at all.
ON THE GREEN: He walks it in. We’ve got a birdie on the board 11 holes earlier than Saturday. He looks way more comfortable Sunday than during his third-round 75.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 3 (T-10)
Hole No. 2: Par 3, 198 Yards
OFF THE TEE (11:22 a.m. ET): This one was OK. Pin is back right, Woods goes left and short of pin. He’s in the middle of the green and will have about 50 feet for birdie.
ON THE GREEN: That was a realllllllly fast first putt. Tiger knocks that one 7 feet by even though the ball just trickled the last 20 feet. No bother, though, he rolls in the comebacker for a par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 2 (T-10)
Hole No. 1: Par 4, 423 Yards
OFF THE TEE (11:11 a.m. ET): And Tiger starts off much better today. This one goes down the right-center and is perfect. Fairway.
APPROACH SHOT: From just under 100 yards, Tiger knocks this one 10 feet beyond the flag. That’ll be a good birdie look to start.
ON THE GREEN: He thought that one was in, but the ball dove left at the end and lipped out. Opening par, but Woods was walking after that, he thought he had birdie.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 (T-10)
Tiger … in Sunday Red.
